The Best Nutrients for Healthy Hair


Wondering why your hair just doesn’t look as healthy as you think it could? Just as eating the right foods for your body to remain in shape and for your organs to function at their best, eating the right foods for hair health is important for your overall wellness. Inspired by Harpers Bazaar, here are the best nutrients for healthy hair and where you can find them in food:

1. Zinc
Zinc is a mineral that is important in the repair—and growth—of tissue, including the growth of hair,” explains Deborah Enos, a certified nutritionist in NYC. Foods that have high amounts of zinc are: Oysters, Lamb, Spinach, Pumpkin Seeds, and Peanuts.

2. Vitamin C
According to Lauren Slayton, RD, founder of Foodtrainers NYC, this vitamin helps boost collagen production which surrounds hair and keeps it strong. She recommends working Vitamin C into your diet once or twice a day. You may think that Oranges have the most Vitamin C, but Yellow Bell Peppers actually lead the list. Guava, Kale, Kiwi, Broccoli and Strawberries also provide more Vitamin C than Oranges!

3. Biotin
This is a form of Vitamin B which increases hair growth and overall scalp health,” says Slayton. Bioton-rich foods include Eggs, Carrots, Almonds, Walnuts, and Halibut.

Other foods worth mentioning:

Spinach: “This vegetable is full of iron and folate, which is a B vitamin that is helpful in the creation of red blood cells,” explains Enos. “While iron allows the blood cells to carry oxygen. And the two are a winning combination for your hair and the rest of your body, as well.”

Greek Yogurt: “It’s high in protein and vitamin B5, a good combination for helping to increase hair growth,” says Enos. It’s also a source of vitamin D, which has been recently linked by research for helping to promote healthy hair follicles.
